Underwater acting

In comparison to his co-stars on the set of Avatar: The Way of Water, Stephen Lang had it quite easy. Lang’s character didn’t spend a whole lot of time in the water, in contrast to Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, and other actors.

The majority of the actors had training in the techniques of free diving, a type of diving that relies on breath holding rather than scuba gear, in order to pull off the underwater sequences while preserving director James Cameron’s preferred technique, performance-capture. Cameron has been free diving for a long time.

It turns out that Lang was really competent at it, regardless of Quartich’s requirements. He modestly says, “I did fine. “I can maintain a static hold on my breath for five to six minutes. When Jim says to take action, I can work underwater for a minute or a minute and a half, finishing the task.”

The cast studied free diving with Kirk Krack, who’s achieved global recognition for his diving expertise and his jaunts in extreme underwater environments. Winslet became a quick standout as it was widely reported the actress, who plays spiritual Metkayina chieftain Ronal, could hold her breath past seven minutes.

“I think anything to do with water, it’s 10 times harder, whether you’re under it or whether you’re being drowned, sinking in it,” Worthington says.

“The real challenge on this one was trying to preserve your character while you’re doing these things in water, because you could quite easily get caught up in your own head, which then takes you out of the scene, which takes you into your own fears, and then you’re not doing your job.”

Experiments at home, then in Landau’s swimming pool, established methods for waterproofing cameras in submersible housings. But the water itself presented new issues.

“We quickly found out that the infrared gets absorbed in water, which is normally how we do motion capture, so we had to go to ultraviolet light … that would transmit through water but would also be picked up by the camera sensor,” Champney said. “There wasn’t a lot of information out there on the topic, so it was a lot of trial and error.”

It’s the biggest diving movie of all time’

Kirk Krack, a veteran free diver and coach who trained actors, stunt people, and crew members for months prior to the “Avatar” shoot, declared that this was unlike anything that had ever been done before. This is not Aquaman hanging on a line with a fan in their hair; rather, it is the biggest diving movie ever because it was shot wet for wet.

There has never been a movie that has done what this underwater unit did to the level we did it, to the realism of the reality we’ve done. this isn’t some [VFX artist] programming what they believe swimming looks like.

A chance meeting on a shared flight years earlier had given Krack, a veteran free diver who worked on the 2009 documentary “The Cove,” the opportunity to introduce himself to Cameron.

“I walked up and said, ‘Nothing ventured, nothing gained,’” Krack remembered with a smile. “My name’s Kirk. I’m a free diver, and I’m going to hand you my card and say, ‘How long can you hold your breath?‘”

Between takes Cameron would give notes, which Krack would help translate using nonverbal cues, and they’d try to quickly reset. “He’s Michelangelo.

Just, you know, painting with 1,500 people,” Krack said. “He is going to get it until it tells the story, the physics make sense, the movements make sense. Whereas most other directors or studios might just say, ‘Eh, close enough.’ And that’s what will make this the biggest movie of all time.”

The hardest part of cutting a movie is letting go of scenes that are beautiful, terrifying, or suspenseful just for their own reason, according to the director.

Throughout the editing process, Cameron vacillated over what to include, noting, “Things came out, and then if I felt the rhythm was off, we put things back in.”

The story for the sequel has undergone more than ten years of revision by Cameron. Avatar 2 has experienced delays since it was initially scheduled for release in 2014 because of technological limitations (it had never been done before to film performance-capture scenes underwater), but the director has long cited storytelling difficulties as one of the biggest roadblocks to release.

When The Way of Water was delayed in 2016, the director pointed to a  “very involved” writing process with co-writers Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa as part of the explanation. “There’s a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don’t get when you’re making a stand-alone film,” he told the Associated Press at the time.
